Adding Description to Sentences

This week we are looking at ways to add description to our sentences. As a class we create success criteria together
1. Use adjectives to describe nouns
2. Use adverbs to describe verbs
3. Include similes or metaphors.

Miss Lowden gave us very boring, simple sentences and we had to use our success criteria to add detail.

Wellington Saints vs Hawkes Bay Hawkes

I had an awesome Saturday night, I got a free ticket from Brett to go tot he Saints basketball game. I went with Brett, Diana, Emerson, A.J, Esene, Elanar, Lilly, Nikita and Josiah in the school van. WE parked along the waterfront and walked along the wharf to the TSB Arena. When we got there I was jumping out of my pants because when we walked into the TSB Arena, it was so big, and there were so many people. The Saints and The Hawks were practicing their basketball skills. It was so cool. The Saints mascot was a gorilla, he was dancing to the shuffling song. The players shoes were squeaking on the shiny, bright floor. I found out that you can guard any player and there are 4 quarters to a game. Of course  the Saints won, 88-73. The Saints rock! I sat next to Brett up the back and when Miss Lowden arrived, I sat next to her. I was my first every live basketball game and I hope I have lots more to go to.

In the cold, blue night, waiting for other people to come, eating warm hot chips, chewing and eating. Seeing everyone, we all get into the three cars and we start our trip to Wellington. We drive past the TSB Arena but cant find a parking spot. We park near the sea. We start to walk, passing the sea, I see a reflection of the lights. AS we all see a big hill, that goes up and then down. Entering into the TSB Arena, we see lots of people, we arrived just in time for the game to start! The game started, we watched for a long tim e and then the final score was 88-73 to the Saints. after that we all went home.

On Saturday night some kids from basketball went to the Saints vs Hawks game. We went in the school van. We had to walk to the TSB Arena because we parked far away from the arena. We walked along the wharf in Wellington. The water was flat and clear. The game for the Saints was easy. After the game there were a lot of people in the stadium. There was a bouncy ball on the floor and Ross threw it up and I caught it. The final score was 88-73 to the Saints.

Using www.studyladder.co.nz to help us learn!

This morning we started using Study Ladder. It is a website where we get out own login and password. Miss Lowden can go on and set tasks for us to complete. Because we have been learning about Measurement in maths, that is what we were working on today.

"I like completing different activities in my own time on Study Ladder" Teaue

"I like Study Ladder because it is fun and exciting and I got to customise my own avatar" Joe

"Study Ladder will be good for our learning because the activities test what we have been learning in class." Steve

Measurement Learning Stations

the moment in Maths we are learning about Measurement. This week we investigated length. We  worked through lots of different learning stations. We enjoyed learning like this because....

This group is using a tape
measure to record different length
lines.

  1. We got to work in small groups
  2. We got to help each other
  3. We spent 20 minutes at each learning station so we got to try lots of new activities
  4. We were using maths equipment
  5. We had heaps of fun
We are going to use learning stations next week to investigate Weight, Volume and Capacity

Show Not Tell Descriptive Writing

Recently we have been working on descriptive writing that shows, not tells.
This means that we write really clear descriptions without telling the reader what we are actually describing. We can use our 5 senses to add detail to our descriptions.

Here is some of our writing.

As we open the door a gust of cold air hit our faces. Cars are covered in frost and the roads are black with ice. Kids are throwing snow balls around. I can smell soup and hot chocolate. We sit by the fire watching movies and playing games together.
By Jahvarn.

It is a cold day and there is frost on the grass and you might slip on the concrete. It might be slippery and windy causing cars to slide down the road fast. The concrete is white with snow and lakes turn to ice.
By Joseph.

Big blue waves crashing against huge black rocks like flashing lightening. They're twirling like a colossal corkscrew. Surfers riding through the waves. People bathing in the blistering hot shining sun on the golden grains of sand. Families building beautiful sand castles. You can hear kids screaming loudly like a blow horn while playing touch, volleyball and tag. Dogs barking while their owners throw an orange frisbee. Families having a yummy picnic and having fun in the sun.

There were huge crowds gathering around me, shouting, screaming and playing music. People were jumping in the air. Pushing and shoving to get a signature. Seeing the All Blacks made me so happy. I can smell chips and hot dogs around me.

An unmade bed and dishes stacked up in the corner of the room. Standing in the middle of a pile of dirty clothes. There is rubbish, like lolly wrappers lying on the floor and someones dirty shoes have walked over the carpet. All of the drawers are pulled out and looking disgraceful. Toys are scattered around the room.

Basketball

This term we were lucky enough to have Ross and Jordan run basketball sessions for us. They play for the Saints.

We love basketball in Room 16 because it is fun, keeps us fit, we get to run around and we get to work in a team.
